Using a regular bench chisel to pare or trim, especially in tough end grain or unruly figured grains, can be quite difficult without "skewing" the blade's angle of attack.

In some situations this technique can also be rather awkward. Because the edges of these chisels are already skewed you can meet the job head on, with less fuss and less effort.

They'll shear through the toughest wood and the angled point also makes them ideal for getting into tight quarters, particularly dovetails.
