Though not as familiar a tool to most woodworkers as bench or mortising chisels, firmer gouges are useful to the cabinet maker for numerous tasks.

In practice it is easiest to think of them as a combination of a curved blade bench chisel and a carving or sculpting tool.

An out-cannel gouge has its edge beveled on the outer curve of the blade and is generally used to scoop out hollows such as flutes or grooves, and perform other curved sculpting, coping or paring cuts.
